Volcanoes also spew gold

There is a volcano in Antarctica, Mount Erebus, which spews around 800 grams of gold into the air every day.

Mount Erebus is one of the 138 most active volcanoes on earth and also the most southerly. It releases gas bubbles containing crystallized gold worth almost 6,000 US dollars into the air every day. This can be measured up to a distance of 1,000 kilometers; the volcano is located at an altitude of almost 12,500 feet. The gold dust is therefore spread far and wide. This is possible because the volcano lies above a thin layer of crust and molten rock can therefore easily rise from the earth’s interior. However, the particles are too small and too widely distributed to attract gold prospectors. Mount Erebus became famous in 1979 when an Air New Zealand plane crashed into the side of the volcano, killing all its passengers.

It is well known that gold is currently a hot topic, just think of the enormous price increase. There are no really plausible explanations as to why the price of gold has risen so sharply in the past three months. According to the new report by the World Gold Council, total gold demand in the first quarter of 2024 was five per cent lower than in the same period in 2023. Investment demand fell as gold ETFs suffered outflows. There was a small increase in coins and bars. Demand for jewelry also fell by two percent. However, the central banks once again ensured strong demand. In China, demand from private households even reached a ten-year high in the first three months of 2024. Indians also bought more gold again during this period. Investing in gold has paid off in the past. A well-positioned portfolio should also benefit from the stocks of gold companies.
