Remote fever screening to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19

Fever screening is used to detect infectious diseases at an early stage, to cut off routes of spread and to enable treatment of infected persons as early as possible. Modern fever-screening thermal cameras can detect elevated body temperatures of people with an accuracy of up to 0.1 degrees.

Where can fever screenings be used sensibly?

The use of body heat measuring cameras makes sense wherever large gatherings of people are encountered, such as at the entrance or waiting areas of office buildings, public amenities and transport hubs. Measuring forehead temperature using hand held devices from the distance of one meter is time consuming and can threaten safety of the personnel. Thermal cameras can therefore help wherever manual measurement is not safe or efficient due to time constraints. If a certain limit value is exceeded, the camera sounds an alarm and sends a notification to the remote operator or its department.

At many Asian airports, fever screening has long been part of everyday life. To stem the spread of coronavirus, more and more countries are introducing fever screening at their airports, including the USA. At border crossings, for example from Germany to the Czech Republic, fever screening is now part of everyday security measures against COVID-19.

Even critical infrastructures such as the Vienna Trauma Hospital rely on thermal imaging cameras. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), in its options for separate treatment of COVID-19 suspected or confirmed cases and other patients in the health care system, states that the health of medical staff is crucial for enough treatment capacity and patient safety. Among other things, fever screening is recommended.

The technology does not stop at shopping malls and office complexes. Chempark, whose three sites in Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen are home to 70 companies and around 48,600 employees, introduced fever screening with distance scanners in March 2020 to protect its people and sites.

The solution: fever measurement from a distance

unival group® and oneclick™ help companies and public institutions to improve safety of their employees and society in general, especially after Corona. Automated fever screening will become widely accepted for prevention reasons alone. While unival group® provides the thermal cameras and software for fever measurement, the oneclick™ platform enables the connection to the cloud, so that the software can be operated by security staff at different locations via a digital workspace in the browser.

An important criterion for the use of screening measures – including security screenings as part of admission controls – is the speed with which the largest possible number of people can be screened, such as employees during a shift change. Recently, Apple had to incur considerable costs to compensate its workers for overtime due to lengthy admission checks at the points of entry.

The opportunity and at the same time the challenge lies in the automation of processes and the AI-based evaluation of large amounts of data. unival group® specializes in the operation of multi-sensor solutions such as the automated combination of fever and person screenings, by means of which alarms can be generated in real time and significantly higher flow rates can be achieved at the same time. In addition, both employees and security personnel can carry out their duties in more respectful manner from a safer distance. In the event of a high volume of checks, employees from a central control centre can take over additional tasks and intervene directly in the processes via oneclick™. Thanks to the streaming technology of oneclick™, the future of carrying out similar remote security checks safely is literally within reach.
