Space Mining

The exploration and extraction of raw materials from space is no longer a mere fantasy.

More and more economic interests are focusing on space. Startups around the world are already working on mining resources in space. They are researching the mining of raw materials on asteroids. Selling material mined in space, for example to supply space vehicles, would be a great idea. Legal regulations already exist in the USA and Luxembourg. However, the question of whether something like this would pay off is not simple. The launch of a probe to the asteroid "16 Psyche" is eagerly awaited in October. NASA is responsible for this.  "16 Psyche" was discovered in 1852 and the asteroid was named after the wife of the Greek god Eros.

The asteroid is located between Mars and Jupiter and should consist mainly of nickel and iron. For the time being, it may only be possible and sensible to use the mined material "on site". Longer missions in space in particular require a supply of resources, such as oxygen or hydrogen. Bringing material to Earth is (still) an utopian idea. A researcher from the Technical University of Munich, who is concerned with space resources, believes that the use of resources on the moon could be demonstrated in as little as five to ten years.

The next is probably the construction of a moon station, the construction of a station on Mars is still far away. Let’s be curious what the Psyche mission will bring in the way of insights. In any case, the Psyche space probe will soon be launched and fly past Mars. A solar-electric drive will fly the probe to the asteroid after gravity assist. However, raw materials are still coming from Earth.
