BECHEM Introduces PFAS-Free Lubricant Technology

With the newly developed BECHEM Nexus Technology, BECHEM has taken a forward-looking step in the field of lubricant development. This innovative technology completely eliminates the use of PTFE – a common representative of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). While these substances are valued in industry for their chemical resistance, they are increasingly scrutinized due to their persistence and potential environmental risks.

With BECHEM Nexus Technology, the company presents a high-performance solution that unites technical efficiency with ecological responsibility. This technology enables the formulation of PTFE-free products without compromising performance. These PFAS-free lubricants exhibit excellent load-carrying capacity across a wide temperature range and in many applications surpass conventional PTFE-containing products. At the same time, they offer a significantly reduced carbon footprint of around 3 kg CO₂ equivalent per kilogram – compared to 7–10 kg for PTFE-based products.

By consciously eliminating PFAS, BECHEM actively contributes to the protection of natural resources and the reduction of industrial emissions. Avoiding persistent pollutants not only reduces the environmental burden on soil, water, and air, but also simplifies future efforts in environmental and resource protection. “With BECHEM Nexus Technology, we demonstrate that sustainable innovations will shape the future of the lubricant industry,” says Christoph Hundertmark, Managing Director of BECHEM.

At BECHEM, sustainability is not a trend but a core principle – a vision of what modern lubricant technology should be: high-performing, safe, and environmentally compatible. That is why BECHEM is committed to avoiding the use of PFAS wherever it is technically and application-specifically feasible. BECHEM Nexus Technology proves that today’s high-performance products can also be environmentally friendly. At the same time, it reduces exposure for industrial workers who previously had direct contact with PFAS-containing products.

In addition to the ecological and health-related benefits, moving away from PFAS also opens up tangible economic opportunities. In light of the currently debated tightening of environmental regulations – especially within the framework of the EU’s REACH regulation – companies will face increasing pressure to replace PFAS-based substances. Early adopters of PFAS-free alternatives not only gain a strategic competitive edge, but also minimize future costs related to regulatory compliance, liability risks, and potential remediation of contaminated sites.

The development of this new lubricant generation is part of a comprehensive sustainability strategy that BECHEM has been consistently pursuing for years. The company’s goal is to replace environmentally harmful substances with innovative alternatives that do not compromise on performance. “Our PFAS-free lubricants not only enable a reduction in harmful emissions but also support a more sustainable production approach in the long term,” emphasizes Christoph Hundertmark.
