Brown-White and certified – the first highly wear-resistant shaft seal for food and pharma

In the food and pharmaceutical industry, the highest demands are placed on the lip materials used in shaft seals. The lip materials need to seal reliably and need to be certified according to the industry standards. To prevent premature failure of the shaft seal caused by crystalline media or aggressive chemicals at high speeds, pressures and temperatures, Garlock developed the new GYLON® Brown-White Style 3549, a highly resistant lip material for sealing lips that complies with all currently established standards and applicable certificates.

“Highly wear-resistant materials are often not approved for food and pharma – now we offer a lip material that is highly wear-resistant and also has the necessary certificates so manufacturers no longer have to compromise on wear resistance”, explains Stefan Brinkmann, Marketing Manager at Garlock GmbH. GYLON® Brown-White complies with EC1935 / 2004, FDA and USP Class VI.

The newly developed GYLON® Brown-White was tested on a test bench especially developed by Garlock. Compared with other GYLON® lip materials used in the food and pharmaceutical industry, the new lip material has an up to three times longer service life in abrasive media.

Unitized multi-layer lip material – available in various designs and lip configurations for a variety of applications

The new sealing lip GYLON® Brown-White Style 3549 consists of two calendered and jointly sintered layers, which Garlock has developed explicitly for the requirements of the food and pharmaceutical industries. The components used in the brown running side ensure the material´s high abrasion resistance and superior wear resistance. The white visible side provides a restoring force to further improve the sealing effect of the brown layer, and an improved dissipation of the heat arising at the sealing point.

Due to its dead space reduced design, the "revised lip" design is a best practice in food and pharmaceutical applications. Other lip configurations are available as well. In addition, a very low coefficient of friction and an extremely low surface tension ensure that almost no residue sticks to the new seal. Like the whole GYLON® product family, GYLON® Brown-White is made of PTFE, and therefore highly chemically resistant and also suitable for clean-in-place (CIP) and sterilize-in-place (SIP) processes.

With the new, highly wear-resistant sealing lip material, the food and pharmaceutical industry will be able to achieve significantly better service lives in abrasive media as well as complying to all relevant standards.
